Cryptology by Karl Fulves
Comments (JayandLefty): A variety of card effects from the brilliant and prolific Mr. Fulves, illustrated by Joseph K. Schmidt. Part 5 of a 5 part series. From the introduction: "More than 25 years ago, and completely by accident, I met J. W. Sarles. For me it was a profound event, and one that marked a turning point. Prior to the meeting I had no obsessive interest in magic, but a confused and undirected idea of how one went about actually doing and learning magic. Sarles, through extreme patience, sorted out the problems, and shortly after that first meeting I began to invent tricks in an orderly fashion. One of the first was "Cryptology" (that was not the first card trick I ever worked out; the first was called "Covenant" when it appeared in an early Pallbearers Review, and was devised prior to the meeting with Sarles). For this reason I have a certain fondness for the trick and the many variations worked out over the years. The new versions described in this manuscript will be limited to self-working approaches. If you care to try a more difficult form of the problem, here's one; slide a card between two card boxes. When the boxes are separated, the card has completely vanished. In Part Two of this manuscript you will have the pleasure of reading the Fr. Cyprian solution to a difficult card problem. That he was able to invent so simple an approach to so difficult a problem is a measure of his creative ability."
